CAS Activities at LBIS

WHAT IS CAS?

            Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) is an integral component of the IB Diploma. It provides a counterbalance to the rigours of demanding academic programme. Participation in theatre productions, sports and community service allows young people to share their energies and talents while developing awareness, concern and the ability to work cooperatively.

THE AIMS OF CAS...

  • An appreciation of the potential of the human mind & spirit.

  • An awareness of humanitarian issues.

  •  A recognition that education imposes lifelong ethical responsibilities.

  • A willingness to inquire and an enjoyment of discovery.

  • A confidence in their ability to initiate change.

  • Autonomy and self-reliance.

  • An appreciation of their own and others’ talents.

THE OBJECTIVES OF CAS...

  • Attitudes and values which respect human dignity.

  • A willingness to interact meaningfully with others.

  • Personal qualities of curiosity, honesty & self criticism.

  • An ability to reflect on and to learn from experiences.

  • A spirit of commitment, determination, & perseverance.

  • Ability to meet challenges & an awareness of personal limitations.

  • Practical skills used in the service of others.

  • CAS is  activity-oriented, not passive

  • • Activities  done for personal, financial gain or material benefit

  • • Passive pursuits such as visits to art exhibitions, museums, concerts

  • • Simple, tedious & repetitive work such as photocopying

  • • Filial duties (done for the family) and religious devotion

  • • Fund raising with no clearly defined end

 

Examples:

  • Working in a nursing home when the CAS student

  • Has no idea of how the home operates

  • Is just making sandwiches

  • Has no contact with residents

  • Actually does no service for other people.
