The Middle School – Forms 1-3

Welcome from Robert Roopnaraine Principal of the Middle School

Welcome to the Middle Years Programme at Le Bocage International School. Perhaps one of the most important roles we have as educators and parents is to guide our children through their educational journey. We all know that middle school children are at a point in their journey where they are experiencing a host of changes associated with the transition from childhood to adolescence. Therefore, it is critically important that we offer an educational programme that recognizes these changes and supports and nurtures the intellectual, social, emotional and physical development of adolescent children. The Middle Years Programme at Le Bocage consists of a curriculum standards framework which guides our teaching and learning in all the key learning areas to students in forms 1-3.

The broad aim of the Middle Years Programme and the mission of Le Bocage International School are one and the same: To provide an international education of excellence which challenges and inspires students to realise their full intellectual and personal potential within a caring and supportive environment. To achieve this aim, we provide students with a broad and balanced international curriculum with a strong academic foundation that promotes intercultural awareness and supports and nurtures the physical, social and emotional development of adolescent children.

Pastoral care in each of Forms 1, 2 and 3 is the daily responsibility of an appointed Year Coordinator and a team of Form Tutors. The Principal of the Middle School meets with the pastoral care team and the Guidance Counsellor at weekly Child Study Team meetings. A Life Skills programme is built into the Middle Years timetable with the aim of providing guidance and learning opportunities which allow all students to explore a range of issues related to their health and personal development.

Support services are available for students in need. Non-native speakers of English who have a limited understanding of the English language will receive ESL support to help them acquire the academic English language skills necessary to be successful in the Middle Years Programme. Students who have been identified with specific learning difficulties by the Child Study Team will be referred for Special Needs Support to help them acquire the necessary skills and the strategies to cope with an academic programme.

We also encourage our students to look beyond themselves and become involved in service activities that benefit others in the LBIS community and beyond. All of our Middle Years students have an opportunity to participate in an annual retreat or camp that addresses the theme: Team building and problem solving through physical and intellectual challenge. During the school year, students have opportunities to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular enhancement activities which include sport, IT, chess, art, dance, etc. Ultimately, we want our students to emerge from our Middle School years as creative, confident, and caring individuals equipped with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to learn how to learn to realize the consequences of the choices they make. The partnership between school and family is essential to the success of the Middle Years student. We welcome parent involvement, and we are always looking to tap into parent energy and expertise to enhance our programme. Middle Years Programme Forms 1-3

The broad aim of the Middle Years Programme and the educational mission of the Le Bocage International School are one and the same: To provide an international education of excellence which challenges and inspires students to realise their full intellectual and personal potential within a caring and supportive environment. To achieve this aim, we offer our students a broad and balanced curriculum with a strong academic foundation that promotes intercultural awareness and supports and nurtures the physical, social and emotional development of adolescent children.
The first three years at LBIS introduce students to studies in eight Key Learning areas which are delivered through a Contents-Standards curriculum framework. This provides a balanced, benchmarked and success oriented programme of studies for each student. Performance is assessed both summatively and formatively using strategies designed to promote ongoing and continuous improvement to student learning.

Key Learning Areas in Forms 1-3

Arts: Art and Design, Music
Humanities (integrated approach to geography and history)
English (First Language English A or ESL)
Modern Languages (First Language French or French as a Foreign Language)
Mathematics
Physical Education
Science (integrated approach to the study of life sciences and physical sciences)
Technology: Information Technology, Food Technology, Design & Technology

Information and Communications Technology (ICT)

All students are required to take an IT course in Form 1-3 to enhance their information and computer literacy skills. Part of the curriculum offering involves the Future Kids programme. Middle Years students also demonstrate ICT skills and knowledge which are integrated into the curriculum of other subjects.

Community Service

Students are strongly encouraged to take part in community service to gain an understanding of what it means to be a responsible citizen and to acquire first hand experiences in participating in activities that benefit others in the LBIS community and beyond. Students are required to keep a log documenting their service, and periodically they will have an opportunity to reflect on their contributions. While LBIS does provide some time, opportunities and resources for service, students are expected to take initiative and seek out community service opportunities on their own as well.

Life Skills

Students in Forms 1 to 3 take part in a Life Skills programme through one weekly lesson, the daily form/registration period, assemblies and other activities or presentations outside the regular lesson timetable. The programme includes discussion of issues such as personal relationships, social education, health education, careers education and study skills.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language programme is designed to meet the academic English language needs of those students who enter the school with a limited understanding of the English language. The aim of the programme is to help students acquire the academic English language skills necessary to become successful in mainstream subjects. Through a home language survey, an English language skills assessment and past academic reports, the English/ESL department will identify the level of English language support a student requires. Students who require language support will take English Language Skills. The aim of this course is to help students develop specific academic language skills such as text comprehension and literature appreciation, grammar and usage, sentence and paragraph composition, vocabulary development, oral fluency and focused listening. Depending upon their level of academic English, students may receive additional ESL support to complete tasks for their mainstream classes as well.
