Cultural and Literary trip to France

The Modern Languages department organised its now yearly trip to Paris in August.  After many fundraising activities and much help from parents, and the PTA, we were ready to embark on what proved to be a fantastic and enriching educational, cultural and social experience. Four teachers and a group of 47 students, stayed at the Centre International de Paris (CISP) in Paris for 7 days and embarked on a program that would bring to our knees even the bravest among us. As you may guess, this was the case for the teachers of course but not for the students...

I offer my warmest thanks to our colleagues, the parents who helped us either by donating money, cakes  for Valentine’s day or other items for the raffle, the PTA and the Modern Languages department for their donation as well as the Finance department for being so patient with us .

Thanks also to the parents who readily agreed to allow their children to take part in this big adventure as this has given us the motivation to continue our project.  The pleasure that could be read on the students face certainly tells us that the effort we put in and all the hard work was really worthwhile.

IGCSE Parents Evening

The Form 3 IGCSE Parents evening took place on the 8th of July.  Mr. Roopnaraine, the Middle School Principal, welcomed all the parents and informed them about the changes that would take place as the Form 3 students move to High School: change of Principal, Form Coordinators and Form Tutors. He added that some new subjects would be introduced.

We then had a presentation on the IGCSE program, where parents were informed of the structure and aims of the courses as well as the subjects that would be offered at Le Bocage in January 2010. Three Form 4 students shared their experiences concerning their choice of subjects last year. Mrs. Prya Jundoosing presented an overview of ‘kudos’, the career’s software to the parents. Next, Mrs. Wendy Olivier directed the questions after having presented the Option Form. The formal part of the evening ended with the closing remarks of Mr. Shekar Dewoo, the High School Principal who also welcomed the parents and their children to the next educational strands leading to the IGCSE and IB.

Pupils From Deaf School Visit LBIS

A group of Form 6 students were involved with the Deaf School in Beau Bassin during activity time as part of their CAS programme. They were supervised by Mrs. De Chalain.

After several weekly visits, the group decided to have a get together at LBIS and also to involve the pupils from the Deaf school in an activity.

On the day the students arrived, they were given a tour of LBIS and then taken to the ART room for a ‘ Hand Printing’ activity.

The activity was a big success and students from both the institutions enjoyed sharing ideas and working together.

A big thank you  to the Art department for the set up and providing all the relevant materials.

InterAction Leadership Programme (ILP)

The interaction leadership programme is a British Council Initiative that was launched in nineteen African countries to support emerging leaders.  Its aim is to equip African leaders with the right tools and skills to face the challenges of the 21st century in their respective countries. I consider myself very lucky at being selected for the fourth cohort of ILP that was run from July 2007 to March 2008.

The culminating point of the programme was the Pan-African Event (involving leaders from all the nineteen countries) that was held in Dakar in Senegal, where I got the opportunity to interact and learn from about 110 African leaders.

After having gone through the ILP, I must say it was a very enriching experience that has contributed very positively to both my personal and professional life.

Six very important principles that I have learnt through the programme and that are guiding my life since then are:

  • Appreciation goodwill, and good intent;
  • The power of questions;
  • Exploiting the magic of difference;
  • Working with chaos and order to allow great things to emerge;
  • Allowing others to do great work
  • Working towards congruence.

The award of the certificate for the ILP was presented on the 25th of June 2009 at Westminster house in Floreal.

Professional Day

LBIS held one of its regular professional days on Friday 19th June. These events normally only involve the teaching faculty. However, on this day we were also able to welcome non- teaching staff, students and a parent representative from the PTA.

The day focused on reviewing our current Strategic Action Plan for School Improvement and setting targets for the future. Two areas were focused in on:

  • Student learning and performance;
  • School community, life and culture.

The event proved an important opportunity for different areas of the school community to work together on common goals.

A particular thanks go out to our students and parent who took the time to attend the event.

Music Day Celebration

At Le Bocage, the music day was celebrated on the 17th June, through a great concert in the Multi Purpose Hall.

The concert comprised of students playing in bands as well as in solo, singing as soloist and as well as in groups.

We also had members of the staff participating in the show.

Among the singing and dancing, there was also a fascinating sketch performed by form 1 students.

SKETCH BASED ON SHAKESPEARE’S “A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM”, ON INTERNATIONAL MUSIC DAY 17 JUNE 2009

“‘If music be the food of love, play on, play on…’ said the Bard, William Shakespeare, over 400 years ago. This sketch adapted by the youngest members of the English Department (Form 1), dramatically led by their class teacher Miss Sheela Kulpoo, supported by the  Department, performed for your pleasure, is based on Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”.

Without further ado, and as you like it, let the play begin!”…announced Mr Marlowe Kamulsing, Head of English Department, in his typical histrionic way, dressed in colorful, outlandish garb and chewing carrot and turnip.

The sketch lasted for about 30 minutes. The 24 actors and actresses managed to convey the fairyland atmosphere where illusion and reality blends and where people’s wishful thinking is temporarily realized. The audience had a funny, lovely and magical moment to relish the different plots woven around the themes of love and marriage.

A big thank you to Le Bocage community and especially to the parents who contributed for the stage props. And because this comedy interspersed with music, song and dance was the first of the two- tiered programme, “And now let the music play!” was quite apt to conclude this part of the event.
Remember: “He who sings, prays twice”. (St Augustine).

MUN 2009

Le Bocage MUN club has been invited this year to participate in the AISMUN 2009.  The conference was held in Egypt, a new destination for our group who until now has always been to Europe for this prestigious event.

It is also the first time that we have departed from here in a group of 20 students, the biggest group in eleven years, giving the opportunity to more students to represent our school and Mauritius on an international platform.

Over 15 International Schools from different parts of the world participated in the conference and about 400 students interacted in a simulation of the United Nations Organisation. Students were representing a country’s delegation and were challenged to seek solutions through discussions to reach consensus. Our students did a lot of research work and were fully prepared. They spent three days of intense debate and gained a lot in self-confidence, leadership and public speaking skills. Many teachers were impressed by the unity of Le Bocage team despite of our ethnical diversity.  It is also worthy to point out that all the participants have received a certificate, which will be an excellent reference on their curriculum vitae when they will apply to universities.

It was also an opportunity for the students to visit Egypt and to see one of the most famous tourist destination: the pyramids.

They were shocked by their perfect shape and continually asked questions about how they were built.

Camel rides in the vast Egyptian desert under the sun was also an amazing experience the student will certainly never forget.

During the second term holidays also, a group of eight students had the opportunity to participate in the 13th MUN conference organized by the Ministry of Education in Mauritius.

Our delegation which was representing Togo and Czech Republic respectively, performed very well despite the lack of time for preparation due to mock exams, and managed to receive the award of best delegation.

Well Done! Congratulations.

Board/Staff Retreat

A Board/Staff retreat had not taken place for some time. The last such retreat had taken place in 2003, with the one proceeding that being in 2001. All participants were therefore eagerly awaiting the event.

The original date of Saturday 4th April was rescheduled to Saturday 16th May. All LBIS Board members were invited to the event along with all the teaching staff and office and technical support staff. Close to the event members of the PTA were also invited. It was noted that any future event like this should also include student representatives. It might, therefore be appropriate to rename the event the Le Bocage International School Community Retreat.

Participants arrived at 08.00 for a very early start. The programme was a very full one and much was achieved form the day. The main focus of the event was looking at and revising the current Strategic Action Plan for School Improvement.

F5 Retreat

Date: 6th May 2009
Venue: Jardin Botanique de Melrose.

The first plenary session was lead by the Year Coordinator at 9.30. The session was focused the impact of the IGCSE result over the subject choices for the International Baccalaureate. The requirements and expectations were clearly stated so that the students knew exactly about the possible repercussions onto their choice of subjects.

Mrs. Espiegle took over after the Garden Visit. Her intervention was about how to fine tune the final parts of the IGCSE Programme, tips about how to organize or re-organize study and revision for the exams. She ended up by explaining how we would proceed with administrative issues which going to start soon.

Based on passed experiences, the Year Coordinator wanted to have the year-group input about long-term planning. He commented on how organized one should be in order to get through the IB journey and the most common pitfalls and constraints he has been observing nearly every year. That is why he wanted to set a good calendar of events proposed by the students that would allow them to use their time efficiently by doing things that would be enjoyable and rewarding. The CAS Programme and the Fund-Raising for their form 7 Prom were mainly discussed. A few students felt that it was too early to start thinking about those events but they were made to understand that it is better to be prepared to tackle wisely than to be unnecessarily stressed-out when tackling those unavoidable issues. The ideas that cropped-up during the brainstorming sessions were Portrait-Making, Surprise for birthdays, Halloween Nights, Play station/Console Week, Fancy-Fair, Bingo Night and International Week as fund-raisers. For CAS Programme activities the students came-up with only a few ideas like, Making Wrist Band, Tutoring the younger one at school, to paint peoples’ houses and Bus Stops, cleaning Public Gardens and working closely with orphanages.

Our guest speaker Mr. Bancoult’s talked on the Chagosseans Refugees and he went on for more than an hour exceeding the scheduled time but the students wanted to know more and more. The content of the presentation really touched them and they expressed their eagerness to help the displaced population (the Chagosseans) by all means.

The social part comprised of barbecue and desert in a relaxing and casual atmosphere and everybody went for their particular social activity until the end of lunch.

A little group of students made a video clip to present an extra-curricular activity that they were participating in outside school: Tae kondo, rugby, basketball, cricket, horse-riding and summer holiday camp.

Mr. Collard and two students, May-Lynn Parley and Astrid Arlove entertained us with three songs.  The retreat ended on a very positive note and students commented nicely on the event.
